Elementar vario EL cube CHNS Elemental Analyzer

Elementar vario EL cube CHNS Elemental Analyzer

Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur content by combustion analysis.

A CHNS analyzer determines what fraction of a sample, by mass, is carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur. A few milligrams of sample are weighed into a tin capsule and burned in pure oxygen at over 1,000 °C; the resulting gases are separated and measured with a thermal conductivity detector.

Because every pure compound has a fixed elemental composition, comparing the measured percentages with the theoretical formula is a simple, independent check on identity and purity. For peptides, the nitrogen result can also be used to estimate peptide content alongside HPLC.

Applications

  • CHNS composition of peptides and synthetic compounds versus theoretical formula
  • Nitrogen-based estimation of peptide or protein content
  • Purity confirmation of organic chemicals and reference materials
  • Carbon, nitrogen and sulfur content of soils, plant material and feeds

Typical Sample Types

Dry solids and viscous liquids. Typically 1–5 mg for pure compounds; larger amounts for heterogeneous materials.
