Great Midwest Laboratories has acquired a Thermo Scientific Q Exactive Plus Hybrid Quadrupole-Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer. This is a significant addition to our analytical capability and represents our largest single equipment investment to date.

The Q Exactive Plus provides high-resolution, accurate-mass data that enables confident compound identification and quantitation at trace levels. Unlike our existing mass selective detector, which operates at unit mass resolution, the Orbitrap technology resolves compounds that differ by fractions of a mass unit. This makes it possible to identify unknowns, confirm molecular formulas, and detect target analytes in complex matrices with much greater certainty.

We anticipate using this system for environmental contaminant identification, pharmaceutical and metabolite screening, natural product analysis, and research applications where conventional GC-MS or LC-UV methods are insufficient. Installation and initial qualification are underway, and we expect to begin accepting client projects on this platform by late spring.
